Numismatic Coins 101
ASI buys and sells most US numismatici or rare collectible coins. Numismatic coins can be a source of profit as well as an opportunity to capture a bit of history and hold it in your hand. ASI possesses a wealth of knowledge and offers excellent service in numismatics including some important points to consider prior to entering the market.
- For a coin to be numismatic, its retail price must be double the value of its metal content.
- We believe numismatic coins suggest a long-term holding period of at least five years.
- You should only buy numismatic coins that are graded and slabbed by a respected service that is independent of the dealer you chose. The two recognized grading services are PCGS and NGC.
In most cases, dealers make the majority of their profit on numismatic coins, so you can stack the deck in your favor by using these guidelines:
- Buy low mintagei coins – this makes it almost impossible for a hoardi to be found;
- Buy as high a grade coin as you can comfortably afford;
- Buy as low of a population coin as possible. Check the population reports (POPS) to see how many similar coins have been graded by PCGS or NGC since their inception in 1986;
- Buy high-mintage coins only if the POPS indicates a small number have been graded.
The sea of numismatic possibilities can be a treacherous one. It pays to have an expert of sufficient caliber guide you. Steve Emerick was personally mentored by renowned numismatist, the late Glen Kirsch. Glen had more than 45 years of experience in numismatics and was a member of the
American Numismatic Association (ANA) and the International Numismatic Society (INS).
Here at ASI, we broker numismatic coins, but we also offer bullion coins and bars, and precious metal certificates as well as foreign currencies. We would be happy to talk with you about what products we believe would best serve you in the current economy.
